Phase 1 · The Foundation
Not what results do you want. Not what habits do you want. This question comes first — because until you answer it honestly, nothing else sticks for long. This exercise takes about 20 minutes. Take your time.
Most programmes chase outcomes. This one starts at the core.
Step 1 of 4
Don't write the polished version. Write the real one.
Question 1
"The man I want to be in five years — what does he look like physically? How does he move through his day?"
Don't write what he achieves. Write who he is, how he feels, what he does without thinking about it.
Question 2
"If someone who'd known me ten years asked a close friend what I'm like now — what would I want them to say?"
This tends to surface the identity you actually want, not the one that sounds impressive.
Question 3
"What's one thing I keep doing that the man I want to be would never do — and one thing he does that I currently don't?"
This is the gap. The journey lives in this gap.
Step 2 of 4
James Clear describes habits as votes you cast for your identity. Each time you do something that aligns with who you want to be, you cast one vote. Each time you don't, one goes the other way. You don't need to win every vote. You need to win most of them, over time.
8 votes for. 2 votes against. Identity shifts over time — not perfection.
The stoplight effect happens when a few votes against feel like losing the whole election — so you stop voting entirely. This is what ends every restart. The journey changes that pattern by making the identity bigger than any single setback.
This week's votes
"Name three things you did this week that the man you want to be would have done. Name one you wish you'd done differently."
The ratio matters more than the number.
Step 3 of 4
Before building anything new, see clearly what's already there. Most men underestimate what they're already doing right. This isn't positive thinking — it's accurate accounting.
Already voting for
Things you do consistently that align with who you want to be — even imperfectly.
Still voting against
Habits or patterns you keep returning to that don't serve the man you're building toward.
Map your patterns
"List 2–3 things in each column. Be specific — not 'I drink too much' but 'I drink on weeknights to wind down.' Specific patterns can be changed. Vague ones can't."
Step 4 of 4
Not a goal. Not a wish. A declaration of who you are becoming — in the present tense, as if it's already partly true. Because it is. The purpose isn't to believe it fully yet. It's to give yourself a specific person to vote toward.
Your statement — three lines
I am a man who...
I don't...
People see me as...
Phase 1 Complete
This is not a goal. It's who you're becoming — one vote at a time. The next step is to put this somewhere you'll see it every day. Your phone wallpaper. Your bathroom mirror. Somewhere that asks the question before the day has a chance to answer it for you.
Copy your statement and paste it into your notes app to save it permanently.
